Literacy: Our Approach

Development and Literacy Partners International helps under-resourced language groups positively transform their communities through written language development and literacy, and by translating transformational written materials and ideas into their language.

We facilitate literacy by:

• Promoting reading in local languages
• Determining the need for language development through linguistic survey
• Developing writing systems for unwritten languages
• Developing sustainable literacy programs, training literacy educators and expanding the capacity for literacy education
• Providing access to helpful reading materials in the local language
• Promoting the writing of local oral traditions and stories that promote healthy community values
• Developing written materials in the local language that promote health, community values, and economic development
• Translating literature from other languages that promotes the welfare of the community
